Q: I have tried to download the logbook for eval, however when I try to open the program I receive the message "system.mdw" not found.
A: This file is required for startup of MS Access 2000.. Possible causes and solutions:
1. On a computer on which you have installed both Microsoft Access 97 and Microsoft Access 2000, you find that one or both versions of Access are using the wrong workgroup information file (default name, System.mdw). Microsoft is aware of the problem and has posted a resolution (i.e. "workaround") for this problem under: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q241230/
2. When you uninstall Microsoft Access or Microsoft Office, the System.mdw file and the sample databases are removed, even if you have made changes to these files. Solution under: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q224533
3. This is another possibility, extracted from an Access forum: "I recently had the same problem and discovered that my "system.mdw" file had been changed to "system.mdw_". I do not know how or why the file extension was changed to *.mdw_. If you change the file to Read only and delete the _ from the end of the file extension, this takes care of it." Do a search on your Computer, maybe a simple rename can fix the problem? Apparently, the file system.mdw was renamed to due a system error or virus or a setup of both Access97 and 2000, you can rename the file to its original name which is system.mdw. Finding the file: right click on the start menu, click on the windows folder in the C drive, click on the System folder, find the file system.mdw, delete any characters that should not be there, for example an underscore.
As a precaution I'd then copy the file into the C:\EPL\ Directory as well.

Q: Access can't open file (data base).
A: What version of Microsoft Access do you have installed on your computer? The application is designed for Access 2000 or later. Older versions (for example Access 97) do not recognize the application. Also please verify that all necessary files (List of files under "Downloads") are present in the C:\EPL\ directory.
The application itself consists mainly of 2 files. The frontend (epl2000.mde or eplxp.mde and for 2007 epl-data2007.accdb or EPL2007.accde) and a backend (that's where all entries are stored - epl-data.mdb). Your error message indicates that the epl-data.mdb or epl-data2007.accdb is either not present in the C:\EPL directory or that you are using an older version of Access (for example, Acc97) or that somehow the database has been renamed or moved into another folder. ->TOP

Q: I get the error message eplexp.mde is not a valid win32 application.
A:
If you have made sure you have downloaded the correct version of the e-log corresponding to your Microsoft Access (2000 or XP or 2007) then you most likely have a virus on your machine. One virus who returns/displays the message in a pop-up dialogbox "<filename> is not a valid Win32 application" is a virus called "Trojan.Vavico" . Details about this virus and how to kill it can be found under http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.vavico.html (#11: "..not a valid Win32.."). ->TOP

Q: I recently downloaded the logbook and am looking for an access password.
A:
The unlock code for the e-logbook will be transmitted to you when your order is processed - in demo mode the logbook is fully functional, however, restricted to 30 entries ("flights"). After your purchase we will send you your personal unlock key, which disables the 30 entry restriction (see our website, menue "order").
The logbook requires that Microsoft Access is installed on your computer. If you have just installed the Microsoft Office XP/2007 applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access), Microsoft needs you to register (i.e. buy) your apps with them first. But this is probably not what you are asking, I assume you mean our "Electronic Logbook Registration" prompt (see our website, screenshot under Order, Inquiry) when you start the e-log. Just click "cancel" and the logbook will automatically switch to demo mode. ->TOP

Q: EPL2007 does not open in Access 2007 (Just the "Getting Started" intro page of Access 2007 is shown).
A:
Your Access security settings do not allow the database to be opened (because it contains VBA code and Macros). The only thing you'd need to do (when the "getting started" screen is shown) is to click the top left round "Microsoft Office" button ( ), then select the lower right button "Access Options", then select "Trustcenter" on the left, then click the large button "Settings for the Trustcenter", then "Settings for Macros" on the left, select "Activate all Macros", then confirm by clicking "OK" twice. Close Access and start EPL.

A BETTER AND SAFER WAY:
On the other hand you can use the Trust Center (without choosing to allow macros, which may cause a hazard (virus..) if you open other databases from "unknown" sources.
What works perfectly as well is to allow macros ONLY from the EPL directory (C:\EPL). Here's how you configure the Trustcenter (Create a trusted location):

1) Start Office Access 2007 (you do not need to open a database to complete these steps).
2) Click the Microsoft Office Button
3) Click Access Options. The Access Options dialog box appears.
4) In the left pane of the dialog box, click Trust Center,
5) Then click Trust Center Settings in the right pane. The Trust Center dialog box appears.
6) In the left pane, click Trusted Locations.
7) Click Add new location. The Microsoft Office Trusted Location dialog box appears.
8) In the Path box, type the file path and folder name of the location that you want to set as a trusted source (c:\epl) , or click Browse to locate a folder. By default, the folder must reside on a local drive.
9) Click OK (close all dialogue boxes).
10) Close MS Access. Open EPL. That's it

Q: Running EPL 2007on 2 computers -> Error message "duplicate entries".
Q:
Everything seemed to be working after installing to my laptop. I have EPL on my desktop also and saved the airport & logbook files to a flash drive. Downloaded the files to the correct directory on my laptop......imported the files and seemed to be working......about five entries in...I was getting an error message when I entered the departure airport......said something about duplicate entries. I couldn't get past it....had to close program because once I had the error message, no matter which tab I clicked on, I would get the message. I deleted the program to start over, but of course know I need a new passcode.
A: The "duplicate entry" err msg.. every dataset (i.e. flight) has it's own system record number, meaning if you are copying records from one epl to the other there is always the chance that both logbooks use the same record number for different flights.. hence the error message. Shouldn't be a problem, no need to reinstall the program: Go to c:\epl, open the file epl-data2007.accdb, click on the (top left) Microsoft Office button (that's the round one with the four colored squares in it), point to "Manage", and then click "Compact and Repair Database". This utility first optimizes performance by rearranging how the file is stored on your hard disk, and then attempts to repair corruption in tables, forms, reports, and modules. Also it corrects double record numbers. Takes only a few seconds - close the file and start epl. ->TOP

Q: EPL XP -> Error message "duplicate entries".
Q:
I keep getting this message ("The expression On Exit you entered.. produced the following error: ..long text..primary key..duplicate entries..redifine the index..try again") when I try to enter an departure airport and I cannot bypass it. Any idea what is causing it?.
A: As you work with your database the Microsoft Access file will grow and grow. Microsoft Access files never automatically get smaller, even when you have deleted data from them and the file can become fragmented and use disk space inefficiently. Plus it sometimes may occur that (when having deleted an entry) the so called primary key value is not deleted with the entry (your flight) and when entering the next flight Access tries to generate the same (already existing) primary key. This causes the error message "Duplicate entry". A glitch in Access..
But of course there is an easy way to repair the database.
To Compact and Repair a Microsoft Access Database / your epl-data.mdb file under Access 2000, 2002 & 2003:
1. Make a backup of the database file epl-data.mdb (go to c:\epl, copy epl-data.mdb and paste it wherever you wish). This is just a safety measure in case something goes haywire (very unlikely though).
2. Open the original database c:\epl\epl-data.mdb
3. Choose Menue Tools " Database Utilities " Compact and Repair Database
4. Save and close the file.
5. Now start epl and try to enter your flight (airport) again - should work now.
